About

My name is Vida Valentina Paz, I am a passionate World Culture Body Sign Language Enthusiast. I grew up in a large third-generation deaf family, so body sign language is my first language. As a hearing-impaired person who is familiar with both worlds, I have always preferred body sign language as a means of communication. In my opinion, body sign language is the most powerful language in the world and having grown up in both cultures, I can say that is true. Body sign language is nothing more than a secret language of the soul. A soul language that expresses what we really think and how we really feel. That doesn't exist in a hearing world, this kind of communication through soul expression, and secondly, I've always thought how colorful the world we live in would be if everyone could express themselves through more body language and gestures and instead get by with fewer words. Many Deaf people describe feeling disconnected from the hearing world, and often experience that many feel sorry for their "disability" and assume that Deaf people need to be saved or cured. However, this is not the case at all. We are a very proud Deaf community and truly live the good life. Since I could no longer look the other way, I started teaching sign language to all people everywhere I go, be it on the streets, in bars, or in my classes. For this reason, I started teaching body sign language to the hearing world to bridge the communication gap between the two worlds and create tolerant cultural competence on both sides. I use this opportunity to make them aware of the importance of our Deaf culture because body language already shapes the way the hearing world interacts with each other, but the addition of sign language would be a game-changer and great support to our Deaf community. I dream every day of better access to communication for our Deaf world, where we are accepted by the hearing world as socially inclusive, with much tolerance for our culture, and where we are all willing to be more open-minded to other cultures. I am aware that we still have a long way to go, but I strongly believe in the power of body sign language because it is the most beautiful way of communication that a person can experience with others. What do I love about it? I love this way we Deaf people bring each other to life because we have so many beautiful stories to tell and a huge network worldwide and we put so much emphasis on letting the world know what we have to go through every day in life as Deaf people, how we can inspire hearing people learn our language and the successes we have gained as a result. We are always interested in deeper connections and are not really superficial and the coolest thing is that we have our own deaf tribe on which we are very proud. It is simply the way we defend our Deaf community.  What makes my experience unique?  With my unique experience, you can expect a lot of really great opportunities. Once you understand body sign language, you will change your perspective on life. How you think about yourself, how you think about others. You will learn more about our Deaf culture and want to become part of our tribe.  Your life becomes different and more exciting because you become more personable and likable and have a new vibe that didn't exist from you before, and people want to talk to you more because you give them a new outlook on life and they are excited about the way you are giving and you make them curious about what else you are like as a person. By encouraging you to learn body sign language with your family, friends, and colleagues, I promise that you will begin to understand human behavior better.  You are not only doing it for us Deaf people, but also for your personal development and work-life, which can really be of great benefit.
Many new sign language users love to express themselves through body language and gestures these days because it feels welcoming and heartfelt.  You also see individual personalities with real passion, affection, and truth.
What is amazing is that body sign language is gaining popularity nowadays among the new generation, both youth and adults.  According to research, ASL is the third most widely used learning language in the US, where almost everyone takes a sign language course and has also internalized the basic knowledge of ASL and is widely used, unlike the other countries. What are you waiting for?  Finally, start exploring the beauty of life by impressing the world who you really are through your own body sign language and inspire them to do the same.
What do I hope people walk away with? Once you know a little bit about our culture, I want you to leave with so much enthusiasm for our Deaf culture that you will have more compassion, more understanding, and more curiosity and courage to understand yourself and others better by letting your body and hands speak more often.  Believe me, you are more beautiful when you let your soul speak for itself.
